Chilly mornings and cold toes

Happy Menu Monday!

I’m watching a squirrel and a bird darting and diving into the branches of a tree outside my window. It’s either unbridled excitement or a fervor of anger. Who can really tell with a squirrel, they spend a ridiculous amount of time shooting little pew-like sounds at the slightest annoyance to their day. Then again, I’d be jumping around too on this 6 degree morning, just trying to beat the chill. It reminds me of the frosty mornings I would let my Mom’s horses out of their stalls and watch them leap into the pasture, jumping and turning , trying to warm up, with amazing grace for such large creatures. Beautiful, really, if I was quick enough to get the gate open and stay out of their path.

On cold mornings things always seem to be a little more charged. Maybe it’s breathing in the crisp air or our cold toes begging for warmth, but I think winter cold is just natures way of telling us to get moving. So I will take the cue of this bitterly cold, but stunningly blue sky morning and tackle some long overdue checklist items, beginning with several new breads and pastries. After all, how could I resist the radiant warmth of commercial ovens on a day like this? Let’s consider baking my way of getting the warmth moving through my toes.

I hope you’re all doing something you love on this stunning day, too.
