The Bittersweet Moments

As our plans grow and bloom, we’ve had to take a good, hard look at the best path forward. For 1871, The Bakery, the Curated Pantry, the many things yet to come, and the two of us. The truth about navigating all the ambitions that come with our dreams is that, sometimes, you can’t have it all. Or, more accurately in this case, you can’t do it all. Even when you give it absolutely everything you’ve got. That’s been a hard learned lesson for someone like me.

Behind the scenes we’ve fought a very difficult balancing act for quite some time. There are parts of growth that many of you have seen me fight against since opening our doors. With stubborn fervor. Nearly each and every one stems from a deep-rooted belief in what, and how, we’re doing things. As odd and unique in today’s world as they may be. In order to keep true to the dream, and continue to carry the passion and care in our bread and pastry, there have been some very difficult decisions. This is one.

We will no longer be able to take part in the Sparta Green Market. Simply put, we’ve reached a point where we need to focus on everything that is and everything that is coming. Spreading ourselves too thin, at this time, would mean nothing would get done with the quality and care we’ve always promised you.

Being part of the Sparta Green Market has meant the world to us. Every one of 1871’s values and beliefs were founded in everything a great farmer’s market is. Amazing, local, wholesome food, goods and crafts, directly from the farmer and maker. We will always celebrate and support good, honest markets as cornerstones for a better life and community. We sincerely hope you do, too.

Thank you, so very much, for coming to see us every month- through sweltering heat, thunderstorms, and long lines. It’s your support that makes this such a bittersweet decision. We will truly miss being a vendor, but we’re incredibly excited about what’s to come.

In the meantime, just a little reminder. The 154-year-old room holding The Bakery is undergoing a little maintenance and love for the next couple of weeks. However, The Curated Pantry is open every day from 7:30 am – 6:30 pm, with freshly baked bread and pastry Tuesday through Saturday.

See you soon!
